Many today show concern for\u00a0the\u00a0question\u00a0of\u00a0peace\u00a0in relation to\u00a0Islam\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0Islamic world. But few delve into\u00a0the\u00a0deeper dimensions\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0meaning\u00a0of\u00a0peaceor ask why it is that Christians call Christ\u00a0the\u00a0Prince\u00a0of\u00a0Peace\u00a0while fighting so many wars or why\u00a0Islam, that is derived from\u00a0the\u00a0Arabic word for\u00a0peace\u00a0(sal\u0101m<\/em>), is involved in so many battles both within itself\u00a0and\u00a0with invading Western armies.\u00a0Peace\u00a0is an inner attitude\u00a0and\u00a0we must be at\u00a0peace\u00a0within ourselves in order to create a society at\u00a0peace. To be at\u00a0peace\u00a0with oneself must in turn be based on being at\u00a0peace\u00a0with Heaven\u00a0and\u00a0involves also being at\u00a0peace\u00a0with not only\u00a0the\u00a0human world, but also\u00a0the\u00a0world\u00a0of\u00a0nature. How can a civilization in which there are many who are in rebellion against Heaven\u00a0and\u00a0where\u00a0the\u00a0very life style\u00a0of\u00a0most people is based on war against\u00a0the\u00a0natural order be at\u00a0peace\u00a0with itself\u00a0and\u00a0others? In such conditions to speak\u00a0of\u00a0peace\u00a0is to speak\u00a0of\u00a0an unrealizable dream.<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
In\u00a0Islam\u00a0the\u00a0idea\u00a0of\u00a0complete surrender to God (tasl\u012bm<\/em>\u00a0which is also related to\u00a0the\u00a0word for\u00a0peace\u00a0in Arabic) is central\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0spiritual path to universal\u00a0peace(\u1e63ul\u1e25-i kull<\/em>\u00a0in Sufism) has always been available to those who seek real\u00a0peace.\u00a0Jih\u0101d<\/em>, which is usually mistranslated as holy war, itself means exertion to create both withinand\u00a0without equilibrium\u00a0and\u00a0harmony which alone lead to\u00a0peace. But\u00a0Islam\u00a0is faced today with challenges\u00a0and\u00a0tensions that make\u00a0the\u00a0establishment\u00a0of\u00a0equilibrium\u00a0andpeace\u00a0very difficult. These challenges\u00a0and\u00a0tensions include cultural\u00a0and\u00a0intellectual ones resulting from\u00a0the\u00a0invasion\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Islamic world by Western ideas\u00a0and\u00a0norms as well as actual military invasions; challenges\u00a0of\u00a0extreme responses to Western domination by some Muslims a few\u00a0of\u00a0which carry out horrendously violent acts that are against\u00a0the\u00a0teachings\u00a0of\u00a0Islamic Law (Shar\u012b\u2018ah<\/em>); challenges\u00a0of\u00a0various local nationalisms that threaten\u00a0the\u00a0unity\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Islamic world; challenges\u00a0of\u00a0confronting those Western interests in\u00a0the\u00a0Islamic world which are against Islamic interests\u00a0and\u00a0many other challenges\u00a0and\u00a0tensions. All\u00a0of\u00a0these challenges require exceptional effort to try to reach\u00a0and\u00a0establish\u00a0peace\u00a0on all levels from\u00a0the\u00a0individual souls\u00a0of\u00a0men\u00a0and\u00a0women to society at large.<\/span><\/div>\n
On\u00a0the\u00a0more external level\u00a0the\u00a0establishment\u00a0of\u00a0peace\u00a0between\u00a0the\u00a0Islamic world\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0West requires before everything mutual acceptance\u00a0and\u00a0respect. Both sides have to learn to accept\u00a0the\u00a0other rather than vilifying it\u00a0and\u00a0to realize that on\u00a0the\u00a0highest level\u00a0the\u00a0other\u00a0is<\/em>\u00a0our self.<\/span><\/div>\n

The\u00a0yesterday\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0historical relations between\u00a0Islam\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0West may be said to cover\u00a0the\u00a0period from\u00a0the\u00a0rise\u00a0of\u00a0Islam\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0Second World War. For\u00a0the\u00a0sakeof\u00a0analysis one can divide those many centuries into three eras: from\u00a0the\u00a07th<\/sup>\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a014th<\/sup>\u00a0centuries during which Islamic civilization was more powerful than\u00a0the\u00a0West\u00a0andinfluenced Europe deeply in fields ranging from philosophy\u00a0and\u00a0even theology to art\u00a0and\u00a0literature to technology. This period was followed by\u00a0the\u00a0era from\u00a0the\u00a014th<\/sup>\u00a0tothe\u00a017th<\/sup>\u00a0century when Europe became more powerful especially at sea\u00a0and\u00a0began to encroach upon\u00a0and\u00a0colonize\u00a0the\u00a0edges\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Islamic world while powerful Muslim empires still persisted.\u00a0The\u00a0third epoch stretching from\u00a0the\u00a017th<\/sup>\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a020th<\/sup>\u00a0centuries was witness to\u00a0the\u00a0weakening\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Islamic world\u00a0and\u00a0greater Western colonization\u00a0ofit, a colonization that was not only military\u00a0and\u00a0political, but also intellectual, educational\u00a0and\u00a0cultural including artistic. But this period was also witness to Muslim resistance to\u00a0the\u00a0West much\u00a0of\u00a0it religious but also some nationalistic as traditional Islamic political structures weakened or crumbled\u00a0and\u00a0nationalism in its Western sense spread to much\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Islamic world.<\/span><\/div>\n
The\u00a0today that is considered here may be said to begin with\u00a0the\u00a0years around\u00a0and\u00a0after\u00a0the\u00a0Second World War when Muslim countries gained their nominal political independence. But despite this so-called independence,\u00a0the\u00a0invasion by\u00a0the\u00a0West\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Islamic world in domains\u00a0of\u00a0culture, thought, art, life style\u00a0and\u00a0even political philosophy continued\u00a0and\u00a0even increased. This situation helped to bring about powerful Islamic movements in different forms, new Western military invasions\u00a0ofseveral Islamic countries\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0more recent Arab or Islamic Awakening which\u00a0the\u00a0West now seeks to guide\u00a0and\u00a0direct in its own favor. This period is also marked by\u00a0thespread\u00a0of\u00a0Islam\u00a0into\u00a0the\u00a0West in a manner that is historically unprecedented.<\/span><\/div>\n
As for tomorrow, there is no doubt that\u00a0Islam\u00a0as a religion will remain very strong in various Islamic societies\u00a0and\u00a0Islamic civilization will seek to revive itself amidst many intellectual\u00a0and\u00a0political crises in its midst at a time when\u00a0the\u00a0West itself is in a major crisis that is not only economic\u00a0and\u00a0social but most\u00a0of\u00a0all spiritual. In any case\u00a0the\u00a0destinies\u00a0of\u00a0Islam\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0West have been intertwined historically\u00a0and\u00a0are bound to continue to be so in\u00a0the\u00a0future, as far as one can see.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
